シュナウザーはドイツが原産国です。
The Schnauzer is of German origin.

シュナウザーはドイツ語で髭（ひげ）を意味します。
The word Schnauzer means mustache in German.

その名の通り立派な髭を持っています。
As its name suggests, the Schnauzer
has a magnificent bushy beard and a mustache.

顔は長方形で、目立つ眉をして、哲学者の様な容貌です。
Its face is rectangular with prominent eyebrows;
much like the look a philosopher has.

体高と体長が同じ長さの四角い体型です。
Its body height and its length are equal;
the body proportion is square.

耳は先をとがらして切り、立たせます。
The ears are cropped to a point and stand straight up.

尻尾は短く切られます。
The tail is docked short.

しかし最近は動物愛護のため
耳も尻尾も自然のままが多いようです。
However, recently the ears and the tail tend to be left natural
for humane reasons.

毛は二重になっています。
The coat consists of 2 layers.

被毛（上毛）は硬く、まばらです。
The outer coat is wiry and ruff.

下毛は柔らかく密です。
The undercoat is soft and thick.

公認されている毛色は
ソルト＆ペッパー、ブラック＆シルバー、ブラックの３色です。
The recognized coat colors are:
salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black.

白いミニチュア・シュナウザーは
AKC（アメリカン・ケンネル・クラブ）では認められていません。
The white Miniature Schnauzer is not recognized
by the AKC (American Kennel Club).

体の上部の毛は短く刈られます。
The coat on the upper body is clipped short.

頭、体の下部、脚の毛はより長くします。
The coat on the head, the under belly,
and the legs are left long.

特に脚の飾り毛がこの種の特徴です。
The furnishings on the legs
are characteristic of this breed.

雄のミニチュア・シュナウザーの標準の大きさは
体高が３０ｃｍから３６ｃｍ（１２-１４インチ）で、
体重が５ｋｇから８ｋｇ（１１-１８ポンド）です。
The standard size of a male Miniature Schnauzer
is between 30cm and 36cm in height (12-14 inches)
and between 5kg and 8kg in weight (11-18 pounds).

雌のミニチュア・シュナウザーの標準の大きさは
体高が２８ｃｍから３３ｃｍ（１１-１３インチ）で、
体重が５ｋｇから７ｋｇ（１１-１５ポンド）です。
That of a female Miniature Schnauzer
is between 28cm and 33cm in height (11-13 inches)
and between 5kg and 7kg in weight (11-15 pounds).

【Temperament】


ミニチュア・シュナウザーはとても賢く、
飼い主の言葉をよく理解します。
The Miniature Schnauzer is very intelligent
and understands its owner's words well.

活発で明るく、友好的で、愛情に満ちています。
It is a very perky, playful, friendly, and affectionate breed.

子供と遊ぶのが大好きです。
It loves to play with children.

反面、警戒心が強く、知らない人にはよく吠えます。
On the other hand, it is so alert
that it barks a lot in the presence of strangers.

ですから、うまく育てれば良い番犬になります。
Therefore, if well trained,
it makes a good guard dog.

【Origin】


シュナウザーは
スタンダード、ジャイアント、ミニチュアの３種あります。
There are three breeds of Schnauzers;
the Standard Schnauzer, the Giant Schnauzer,
and the Miniature Schnauzer.

最初にスタンダードが
１５世紀後半頃にドイツでつくられたようです。
Originally, the Standard Schnauzer was bred
in Germany in the late 15th century.

黒いプードル、ウルフグレーのスピッツ、
ピンシェ-のミックスです。
It is derived from
the black Poodle, the wolf-gray Spitz, and the Pinscher.

過去にはスタンダード・シュナウザーは
イタチやネズミを獲るために利用されました。
In the past, the Standard Schnauzer was used
to control vermin, such as weasels and rats.

牧牛犬として大型化するためにジャイアントが生まれました。
The Giant Schnauzer was later bred in order to make
the Standard Schnauzer larger in size for sheep herding.

スタンダードとグレート・デンがかけ合わされました。
It is the result of a cross
between the Standard Schnauzer and the Great Dane.

ミニチュア・シュナウザーは１９世紀の末に誕生しました。
The Miniature Schnauzer was bred in the late 19th century.

小型のスタンダード・シュナウザーと
アッフェン・ピンシャーとプードルを交配してつくられたようです。
It is reportedly a mix of the small Standard Schnauzer,
the Affenpinscher, and the Poodle.

ネズミの駆除や番犬などの仕事をしました。
Its principal vocation was rat catcher and a guard dog.

現在は日本にいるミニチュア・シュナウザーの
ほとんどが単なる愛玩犬です。
Today, most of the Miniature Schnauzers in Japan
are simply bred as pets.

ミニチュア・シュナウザーが日本に紹介されたのは戦後すぐです。
It was soon after World War�U
that the Miniature Schnauzer was introduced to Japan.

ミニチュア・シュナウザーを最初に日本に連れて来たのは
米軍関係者のようです。
It is believed that the Miniature Schnauzer
was originally brought to Japan by the American army.

１９５５年頃から日本に輸入されるようになりました。
Importation to Japan began around 1955.

それ以来ミニチュア・シュナウザーは
日本でとても人気のある犬種です。
The Miniature Schnauzer has been a very popular dog
in Japan ever since.
