　太宰府天満宮は学問の神様である菅原道真を祭る神社です。（写真1）
　Dazaifu Tenmangu is the shrine dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, an academic god. (Picture 1)

　菅原道真は学者の家系に845年に誕生します。
Michizane Sugawara was born in a family of scholar pedigree in 845.

　学者としてだけでなく、政治家としてのすぐれた才能から、天皇の引き立てにより要職に就きました。
　His great ability, not only as a scholar but also as a politician, won the Emperor’s favor and took him to an important post.

　しかし彼の昇進を快く思わない藤原氏により、901年に太宰府へ左遷させられました。
However, he received an ignominious transfer to Dazaifu from the Fujiwara family, who hated his promotion.

　失意の内に903年に死亡後、京では疫病の流行や天変地異が起こりました。
After he passed away in misery in 903, a lot of plague epidemics and natural disasters broke out in Kyoto.

　人々はそれらが道真の祟りだと恐れました。
People were afraid that Michizane’s curse caused those troubles.

　そこで道真の御霊を鎮めるため、道真の墓所の上に神社を造りました。
Therefore, a shrine was built on Michizane’s grave for the peace of his soul.

　「千灯明」は年2回、7月と9月に太宰府天満宮の中の心字池の周りで行われます。
　‘SENTOMYO’ is held at and around Shinji Pond in Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine twice a year, in July and in September.

　7月の「千灯明」は24日から25日までの夏祭りの最終日の夜に行われます。
　‘SENTOMYO’ in July is held on the last night of the summer festival from the 24th to the 25th.

　9月は21日から25日までの「神幸式大祭（しんこうしきたいさい）」の最終日の夜に行われます。
‘SENTOMYO’ in September is held on the last night of ‘SHINKOSHIKI-TAISAI’ from the 21st to the 25th.

　「神幸式大祭」は1101年に大宰権帥大江匡房卿（だざいごんのそちおおえのまさふさきょう）が夢のお告げにより始めたものです。
DAZAI-GONNOSOCHI-OE-NO-MASAFUSA-KYO started ‘SHINKOSHIKI-TAISAI’ in 1101, following the revelation of his dream.

　22日は「お下りの儀」です。
‘OKUDARI-NO-GI’ is held on the 22nd.

　御神霊を奉安した御神輿（ごしんよ）が本殿から榎社（えのきしゃ）（菅原道真の住居）に下ります。
GOSHINYO, the sacred portable shrine, which enshrines Michizane Sugawara’s spirit, is brought from the main shrine to ENOKISHA (his residence).

　23日の「お上り」の儀では天満宮へ再び御神霊が戻ります。
Michizane’s spirit goes back to the Dazaifu Tanmangu Shirine in a ritual of ‘O-AGARI’ on the 23rd.

　平安期の装束を身にまとった氏子達の総勢約500名や牛車の行列は、平安王朝絵巻を見るようです。
　I felt like I was looking at a picture scroll of the Heian dynasty when I saw the procession of about 500 shrine parishioners, and ox-drawn carriages.

　行列は五行（ごぎょう）の鐘や太鼓の音に導かれて進みます。
　The procession goes to the sound of GOGYO bells and drums.

　「神幸式大祭」は福岡県無形文化財に指定されています。
‘SHINKOSHIKI-TAISAI’ is designated as a Fukuoka Prefecture Intangible Cultural Treasure.

　「千灯明」は25日の20時頃より始められます。　
　‘SENTOMYO’ starts at around 20:00 on the 25th.

　道真の御霊を慰め、国家安泰、災難消除、五穀豊穣を祈願しながら、心字池の周りの1000本のろうそくに御神火が灯されます。
People light 1000 candles around Shinji Pond with sacred fire to comfort Michizane’s sprit, and pray for national peace, the prevention of disasters, and the generous harvest of grains.

　The wavering flames of the candles had the precincts of the shrine surrounded in subtle profundity. (Picture 2)

　水上舞台では巫女による「悠久の舞」の神楽が神社に奉納されていました。（写真3）
　The Shinto priestesses were dedicating sacred dance and music, ‘YUKYU-NO-MAI’ (an Everlasting Dance), on the water-stage to the shrine. (Picture 3)

　1999年はちょうどホークスがパリーグ優勝した直後に行きました。（写真4）
I went to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine soon after the Daiei Hawks won the Pacific League Championship in 1999. (Picture 4)

　神主さんや巫女さんが御神酒を振る舞っていました。
　Shinto priests and Shinto priestess were offering sacred SAKE for cerebration.

　神社の人達も参拝客が一緒にホークスの優勝を祝いました。
The shrine people and visitors celebrated the Hawks’ victory together.
