◆１８７６年（明治９年）に明治天皇は奥羽巡幸後、青森で灯台巡視船明治丸に乗りました。
　In 1876 (Meiji 9th yr), Emperor Meiji took a trip around the Ou district, and embarked on a lighthouse patrol boat, the Meiji-Maru, in Aomori.

◆明治丸は１８７４年（明治７年）に英国で造られた鉄製の汽船でした。
　The Meiji-Maru was an iron steamship constructed in England in 1874 (Meiji 7th yr).

◆明治丸は函館に寄港して、７月２０日無事に横浜に着きました。
　The Meiji-Maru, stopping only briefly in Hakodate, arrived safely in Yokohama on July 20th.

◆その日を記念して、１９４１年（昭和１６年）、当時の逓信大臣村田省蔵の提案で７月２０日は海の記念日になりました。
　In honor of that day, UMI-NO-KINENBI, Marine Memorial Day, was on July 20th, as proposed by the then Communication Minister, Shozo Murata in 1941 (Showa 16th yr).

◆１９９６年（平成８年）に７月２０日は国民の祝日、海の日に制定されました。
　In 1996 (Heisei 8th yr), July 20th was designated as a national holiday, and renamed Marine Day.

◆２００３年（平成１５年）にハッピーマンデーと呼ばれる新しい法律により海の日は７月の第３月曜日になりました。
　In 2003 (Heisei 15th yr), Marine Day was moved to the third Monday of July, in accordance with a new law, called “Happy Monday.”

◆７月２０日から３１日までの１２日間は海の旬間と呼ばれます。
　The twelve days between July 20th and 31st are called UMI-NO-SHUN-KAN, the Marine Season.

◆海の旬間にはさまざまなイベントが各地で行われます。
　During the Marine Season, various events are held in many parts of the country.

◆海洋研究発表、海洋研究所の一般公開、海上コンサートなどが行われます。
　These events include presentations on marine research, public visits to marine institutes, concerts on the water, and so on.

◆海上輸送、海事、海難防止に大きく貢献した人々が表彰されます。
　Certain people are commended for making large contributions to marine transportation, to marine organizations, and to the prevention of sea disaster.

◆日本は四方を海で囲まれた海洋国で、大小６８５２の島々から成る島国です。
　Surrounded by the sea, Japan is a seafaring nation, made up of 6852 small and large islands.

◆古代より外国の文化は海を渡って日本に伝来しました。
　Since ancient times, foreign cultures have been introduced to Japan by way of the sea.

◆海上運送は加工貿易国である日本の発展に重要な役割を果たしています。
　As Japan is a processing and trading country, marine transportation plays an important role in its development.

◆海産物は日本人の豊かな食を支えています。
　Marine products supply Japan with an abundant food source.

◆海はまた自然環境や気候に大きな影響を与えます。
　The sea also has a great influence on the country’s environment and climate.

◆海の日の趣旨は「海の恩恵に感謝するとともに、海洋国日本の繁栄を願う」ということです。
　The purpose of Marine Day is “to appreciate the benefits of the sea, and to pray for the prosperity of this seafaring country, Japan.”
